Healthcare Would Be Amazing

Once during a class I was teaching at church I asked, "If Jesus of Nazareth had appeared on the ballot this year as a candidate for president of the U.S., and had won, and was now our president-elect waiting to take office in January, why would that be good news?" This is sort of a thought experiment to get people thinking about why Christ's enthronement is good news for the world today. There were plenty of great answers as they worked the question around in their minds, but my favorite, being a pharmacist, came from the back row: "Healthcare would be amazing!"

Jesus showed up in the middle of human history preaching the good news that God's presidential administration (AKA kingdom) had come (Mark 1:15). And from what we read in the gospels, healthcare under Jesus was amazing. People were finding healing and wholeness left and right.

The really unexpected thing about Jesus was that he ascended to heaven and left his followers in charge, encouraging us to participate in the yet unrealized kingdom campaign. The world of healthcare owes a lot to the service and innovation of Christians through history but much remains to be done. I want to help Christians regain a vision that the healthcare profession is a deeply spiritual task because Jesus is reigning and because of this, healthcare should be amazing.

Matthew 4:23-24 (NIV)
Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them.

1 Corinthians 15:24-26 (NIV)
Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
